Nashik is one of the world's holiest Hindu cities. Kumbhmela is held here once in 12 years along with four other cities in India. The name of the Nashik has been changing since long time as per different rulers. It is believed the name "Nashik" was derived after the incident in Ramayana when Lakshman (Sri Ram's brother) chopped off the nose of Surpanakha (Ravan's sister). In a way 'Nasik' is that pilgrimage site where turning point of "Ramayana" came

"Ravana" kidnapped mother "Sita" by cheating from this place only after the nose of "Shroopnakha" was cut

Nashik is a sacred city where lord Shri Rama, Shri Laxmana, and goddess Sita stayed (At Tapovan) most of his time when they were dwelling in the forest during his 14 years exile. The city is situated at the bank of the holy river." Godavari."

Nashik is also famous for his Grape cultivation. The city is also called the "Wine Capital of India" as more than half of India's vineyards and wineries are located here. Around 90% of all Indian wine comes from the Nashik Valley. There are many famous vineyards are also in Nashik eg Sula Vineyards.

Day 1

2.00pm

Kushavarta Kund

Kushavart Tirtha is situated at the heart of Trimbakeshwar town 400 mts away from Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga temple. This 21 ft deep Kund is  having natural aquifers. It is said to be the place from where sacred river Godavari remerges after disappearing at Bramhagiri hills, and hence the superior holiness of this Tirtha.

There is an interesting account explaining the significance of the place. Sage Gautam once committed a sin of killing a cow. As an act of repentance, he performed penance at the peaks of the Brahmagiri Mountains, appeased Lord Shiva and asked for the Ganga waters so that he could wipe off his sin. Pleased with his devotion, Lord Shiva jerked His big locks of matted hairs on the Brahmagiri Mountains and sent Ganga down onto the earth. Today that place is known as Gangadwar, situated half way to the Brahmagiri Mountains. There is a temple of Ganga, now known as Godavari River. Ganga appears first time here, after which it vanishes.

But the flow of the Ganges was tremendous due to which the sage could not bathe in her waters. He then surrounded the river with Kusha, a type of grass and reduced the flow.  After bathing here his sin of killing a cow was finally wiped off. The tirth (pilgrimage) came to be known as Kushavart.

It is believed in Hindu tradition that takes a bath in Kushavarta Tirtha is freed from all types of sins and curses. The line "Jyahe karave kushavarti snan, tyache kailasi rahan," is said by Shri. Namdev Maharaj states that one who takes a bath in holy Kushavarta Kunda will live in Kailas (Lord Shankara and Goddess Parvati).

There are temples at the four corners of the kund. On the southeast corner is the temple of Kedareshwar Mahadev, who in disguise of Kedarbhatta made Gautam bathe in the waters and gave him prayaschitta for the sin of killing a cow. To the southwest is Sakshi Vinayak, who is a witness to the yatra-vidhi of all pilgrims. To the northwest is Kusheshwar Mahadev, and to the northeast is the temple of Godavari.

Trimbakeshwar Temple

Trimbakeshwar Shiva Temple is an ancient and historic Hindu temple in Trimbak village (Located in the Nasik district of Maharashtra) dedicated to Lord Trimbakeshwar (Supreme deity Lord Shiva). It is 28 Km far from the City of Nashik. Trimbakeshwar Temple is an ancient temple of Lord Shiva and identified as one of the divine 12 Jyotirlinga. Trimbakeshwar is unique as it is the only shrine that has faces of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva, embodied in one Jyotirlinga. The structure of the actual Trimbakeshwar Shiva Linga is quite different than the other 11 jyotirlingas. There are a small thumb size three lingas (holes) instead of the "Linga" from which the holy Ganga river originates, and three lingas depict the Trinity or Trimurti (i.e., Lord Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesha) known for the Creator, Preserver, and Destructor of the universe. All the places where Shiva appeared are known as a Pillar of Light (Jyotirlingas). It was believed that there was 64 jyotirlinga, out of which 12 jyotirlingas are considered to be divine. 12 Jyotirlingas are Somnath (Gujrat), Malikarjuna (Shrisailam in Andhra Pradesh), Mahakaleshwar (Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh), Omkareshwar (Madhya Pradesh), Kedarnath (Himalayas), Bhimashankar (Maharashtra), Vaidyanath (Jharkhand),Kashi Vishwanath(Uttar Pradesh), Nageshwar (Dwarka), Rameshwaram (Rameshwaram, Tamil Nadu), Grishneshwar (Aurangabad, Maharashtra).

The Trimbakeshwar linga is covered by a jeweled crown (crown consists of diamonds, precious stones) placed over a tridev gold mask. That jeweled crown is said to be a crown from the age of Pandavas

According to the legends, Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu once had an argument regarding their supremacy. Lord Shiva pierced the three worlds with a huge endless pillar of light, the jyotirlinga, to test Brahma and Vishnu. Shiva asked Brahma and Vishnu to find the end of the Jyotirlinga to prove their supremacy. Both went to find the end of the Jyotirlinga. Eventually, Brahma lied that he had found out the end, while Vishnu conceded his defeat. When came to know the lie of Brahma, Shiva appeared as a second pillar of light and cursed Brahma that he would never find a place in ceremonies, while Vishnu would be worshipped till the end of time. The jyotirlingas are the shrines, where Shiva appeared as a fiery column of light.

Trimbakeshwar Temple Details:

Timing

The opening and closing timings of the Trimbakeshwar Shiva Temple is 7 AM to 8 PM.

You will get the VIP Darshan Pass at main gate of the temple. VIP Darshan pass will cost you Rs. 200.

Architecture:

Temple is located at the foothill of the mountain "Bramhagiri," where the Holy Ganga River originates (Maharashtra's longest river). The History of the Trimbakeshwar Temple is that it was built-in 1755-1786 AD by Shri. Nanasaheb Peshwa. The Temple is made with black stone, and it is bordered with a 20 to 25ft stone wall that gives a prosperous look. It has Nagara style of architecture. A mandapam with doors on four sides is located right before the inner sanctum. The doorways are decorated with arches and pillars. The temple, as with many hindu temples, features archaic sculptures of various human and divine figures.

At the beginning of the temple, a prominent Nandi (made of white marble) faces the Shiva linga. Nandi is said to be the Vahana (Vehicle) of Lord Shiva (Shankara). It is believed that if one tells his wish/ desire in the ear of Nandi, then he will convey that wish to Lord Shiva. After the Nandi temple, there is a big (spacious to meditate and worship) hall called "Sabha Mandap," and then "Gabhara" main temple where linga is situated.

Brahmagiri Hill (Not visited)

Brahmagiri Mountain is where the holy Ganga River originated and is usually known as the Godavari River. Brahmagiri hills hold the prestigious position. River Ganga goes through the ranges of Brahma Giri. There are 750 steps to climb Brahma Giri Mountain, which needs a minimum of 4 to 5 hours. The Sacred Ganga River flows in three directions. i.e., towards the East (known as the Godavari), towards the South (known as Varna), and West known as west-flowing Ganga, she meets the Godavari near Chakra Tirtha. There is Sangam of River Ganga and River Ahilya in front of Trimbakeshwar Temple, which is the sacred place, and thus people having no offspring came here to perform the ritual at Sangam. The height of Brahmagiri Mountain is 4248 ft from sea level.

Gangadwar is the main gate which is halfway from Brahma Giri parvata. On which Temple of Ganga River exists. It is said that Ganga appeared at Gangadwar for the first time, and afterward, it vanished from Brahma Giri Mountain. The Godavari comes to Gangadwar from the Brahmachari.

The great River Godavari is originated at the Bramhagiri hill. When Lord shiva hit hits, long grown hairs (called Jatt) on the rock and water came out as a never-ending source, and it also disappears. But then it is seen on Gangadwar hill again; thus, the place's name becomes "Gangadwar." It is a miracle to see water coming out from the rock in Brahma Giri hill. At Gangadwar, there is the temple of Goddess Shri. Kalambaka Mata and Shri. Gorkhnath and Shri. Macchindranath.

Day 2

Hanumna Janamsthali

A temple of Lord Hanumana @ the birth place of Lord Hanuman

Ramkunda

"Ram Kund". is a small pond and triveni sangam of three river - Varuni, Tharuni and Godavari. According to "Shastras", Lord Rama used to take bath in "Ram Kund" during his stay in Nashik. And This is the place where he did the offering of libations of water for his father "Dashrath Ji" to the Gods

The temple of "Ganga Ji" is situated above "Ram Kund" and just near there is "Godavari" temple. "Godavari" temple opens once in 12 years when Jupiter comes in Leo sign of zodiac and remains open for that whole year.

Another main feature of "Ram Kund" is that during "Kumbh Mela" devotees take holy bath here. Lord Rama's devotees take holy bath in Nasik's "Ram Kund" & Lord Shiva's devotees take holy bath in Trimbakeshwar's "Kushavrat Tirtha"

You will find many temples near Ram Kund and you can also see a big Hanuman Ji  Idol.

Kapaleshwar Mahadev temple

It's just at a distance of 50 m from "Ram Kund". It is Lord Shankara's temple and it is the only temple in India where you will not find Lord "Nandi" in front of Lord Shankara

It's natural for Lord "Nandi" to be in front of Lord "Shiva" everywhere in universe or in this world. But this is the first such "Shiva"temple where Lord "Nandi" is not in front of him. This  is also written in "Markanday Puran". "Brahma Ji" used to have 5 faces. Once he condemned Lord Vishnu in the assembly. In a fit of rage, Lord  Shiva severed one of his heads. So, Lord Shiva felt guilty of 'Brahmahatya'. Roaming in the universe, he reached on the banks of "Godavari". There was a 'brahman' named Alakdevshram. The conversation between his cow and his calf was listened by Lord "Shiva"while sitting away. The calf was grown up now and he said to his mother if my owner provokes me for work I will kill him with horn. Mother said that then you will be guilty of 'Brahmhatya" because our owner is a "Brahman".But that calf had the knowledge of previous birth. He said one get rid of this sin if one take bath in the confluence of 'Arun', 'Varuna', & 'Godavari'. Sitting away Lord "Shiva" listened all this and seeing this Lord "Shiva" took bath in that place where he get rid of "Brahmahatya"

Lord "Vishnuworshiped and welcome him and said that your sin is gone. He told him to reside here by the name "Kapaleshwar'.After coming to this place Lord "Shiva" said with your guidance my sin was gone and who shows the way is the mentor. So at this place you are at the mentor This place also tells us the glory of "Guru-Shishya"

Panchvati

There are 5 Banyan trees and numbers have been given to them Banyan. Banayan tree is called "Vat Vriksha". 5(Panch) Banyan(Vat) is how Panchvati has come. Its distance from "Ram Kund" is 800 m

There are two main places in 'Panchvati'

Firstly we'll go to "Sita Gufa" which is very famous among devotees

  • & second main pilgrimage site is "Sri Kalaram" temple

Sita Gufaa

Here Mother "Sita" used to worship Lord "Shankara". This temple is not much big but is full of Spiritual energy. This may be because mother Sita did penance and most worship here only during exile. Cave is quite narrow. Firstly you will have sight of Lord 'Rama', Mother 'Sita' & Lakshman Ji'  and then of Lord Shiva's 'Shivalinga'  where Mother 'Sita' used to worship Lord "Shiva". It is believed that Ravana kidnapped Sita from this place.

Sri Kalaram Ji

The temple is at a distance of 100 m from Sita Guva. Lord 'Rama' spent 2.5 years in 'Sri Kalaram' temple  during 14 years of his exile. This temple is supposed to stand on the spot where Lord Ram lived during hid exile. It was built in 1782 by Sardar Rangrao Odhekar on the site of an old wooden temple. The architecture you will see here is 'Himantpandi' architecture. The temple has been built with black stones. Its construction & architecture resembles that of "Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga" up to the great extent. Lord 'Rama', 'Lakshman ji' & mother 'Sita' idols which we see are self manifested  and made of black sand.Right in front chanting Lord Rama's name, Lord's servant mighty strong "Hanuman ji" is standing.

This is the only temple where Lord 'Rama' has his right hand on his chest and left hand is straight towards his own feet contrary to other image of Lord Ran with Bow and Arrow in hand

On the request of Saints, Lord Rama killed "Khar-Dushan" and "Trishir" etc.14000 demons who were destroyers of religion and freed this sacred place from fear and blessed the sages.

 Tapovan

This is a province which was blessed by the touch of Lord Rama’s feet during His exile. It was later used by the monks and sages for their spiritual advancement and welfare of the public in general. Tapovan literally means jungle for meditation and penance.

The Sangam of rivers Kapila and Godavari at Tapovan

There are 3 kunds which, according to the guide, are known as Brahmatirth, Shivtirth and Vishnutirth. They are linked to each other at the bottom by narrow paths. There is another kund known as Agnitirth which he said is very deep and is the place where Lord Rama had hidden the real Sita while keeping the shadow Sita with Him who was later abducted by Ravana from the Sita Gumpha, seen in the earlier post.

Just across Tapovan is Parnkuti believed to be Lord Rama’s Cottage. The Parnkuti Temple where Lord Rama is said to have lived during the exile. It is almost 4 years and 14 days Lord Ram lived in this place. Thi is the cottage where Mother "Sita" crossed 'Lakshman Rekha' to give alms to 'Ravan'

A few paces ahead you will come across the only temple belonging to Lord Rama’s brother Laxman in the country.

Place where Lord Laxman cut Suparnakha's nose - Tapovan, Nashik

There is also a swayambhu (self manifested) idol of Lord Hanuman and a temple of snake Sheshnag, the seat of Lord Vishnu who incarnated as Laxman nearby.

Laxman meditated here for 12 years to kill the son of Ravana, Meghnad, which is how the place got its name, Tapovan. This is also the place where he is said to have cut the nose of Ravana’s sister Suparnakha and threw it on the other side of the River Godavari. Thus the city got its name Nashik, meaning nose.

Taste the guava here

Dwarkadhish Temple

The name Dwarka is literally translated as ‘the gateway to heaven’. Dwarakadhish (or Dwarkadheesh) Temple, a Vaishnava temple dedicated to the Krishna avatar of Lord Vishnu, who is worshipped here by the name Dwarkadhish (‘King of Dwarka’). Lord Krishna is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu.  There are plenty of legends connected with this temple. In addition to its temples and legends, Dwarka is also sanctified as the seat of Adi Shankaracharya (788-820 AD), one of the most revered Hindu theologians and philosophers, who established four maths (religious centres or seats) in four different directions in the country. The Dwarakadhish Temple became part of the Char Dham pilgrimage considered sacred by Hindus after Adi Shankaracharya visited the shrine. Situated on the right bank of the Gomati creek, Dwarka has a history that dates back centuries. ‘Dwar’ means door and ‘Ka’ means Brahma, the Creator. In ancient times, its flourishing port was considered to be the gateway to the main land and, hence, gateway to Moksha (Salvation). According to ancient Hindu texts, Lord Krishna settled here and made this place the capital of his kingdom after leaving Mathura, who migrated from Mathura after killing Kansa, his uncle. The kingdom of Dwarka is also mentioned in the ancient Hindu epic, Mahabharata. Moreover, scientific marine archaeological investigations have inferred that “there was really a city which got submerged in Dwarka in 1500 BC”.The main entrance to the Dwarakadhish temple, the north entrance, is called Moksha Dwara (Door to Salvation). It is located in a crowded market area with narrow lanes lined by shops. I soon get my first glimpse of the famed temple. The exquisitely carved tall, conical steeple of the main temple towers over the adjacent temple domes. Electronic items are not allowed inside temple. Join people if you find them chanting "Dwarkadhish ki Jai" "Nand gher anand bhayo, Jai kanhayya lal ki". You may get help from the official guides (wearing ID cards) who will explain the significance of structure and temples. You need not pay them anything.

The one-metre tall, four-armed idol of Lord Dwarkadhish is made of shiny black stone. It’s a captivating idol with elaborate ornamentation.

Note the dress colour of the main deity. It will be white on Friday, blue on Saturday (7 colours for 7 days of a week) Look for the colour of the flag. Not surprising to see someone changing the flag. It is changed 5 times a day.

The temple complex contains many shrines, of Hindu gods as well as Krishna’s main queens besides Rukmini, who is considered an incarnation of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and beauty.

 Don't miss the Aarti.

Durwasha Muni has kept a condition that he will go if and only if the rath  will be pulled by them. They have agreed. On the way, Ma Rukmani has felt thirsty. Lord Krishna has created water reserviour which Ma has drunk . Durwasha muni has got angry and curse for

Okha Port

Tthe land’s end on Saurashtra (or Kathiawar) peninsula. Primarily engaged into fishing, it is mostly visited by pilgrims proceeding to Beyt Dwarka (or Bet Dwarka or Bet Island), the island residence of Lord Krishna and his family. The jetty is crowded with pilgrims from all over the country. It’s very entertaining to see seagulls(bird) which catch the food thrown towards them. When the boat starts, they follow us for some time and then drop off. After a 25-minute ride, we reach the island. Here too, we are greeted by seagulls.

 Beyt Island

About 30 Km from the main town, you will land at Beyt Dwarka- a small island on the mouth of Gulf of Kutchh. This island was believed to be the main port for this region. The island is dotted with ancient temples, white sand beach, and coral reefs, which lend to its charm.  This is supposed to be the place where Krishna lived, met his friend Sudama and blessed him, and there is a Peetha (Seat) where Krishna is said to have met Sudama.

The temple also has the main Dwarkadish deity which was believed to have been made by Krishna's chief Queen Rukmini and in which Meera bai is said to have merged and disappeared from the material world.

Somnath, 4 pm

Somnath Temple

It  is a Hindu temple situated in Prabhas Patan on the coast of Arabian Sea in Gujarat. It is one of the most important places of pilgrimages in India for Hindus

Dedicated to Lord Shiva, Somnath Temple is believed to be first among the twelve jyotirlinga shrines of Shiva. Somnath means 'Lord of the Soma', an epithet of Shiva. According to history scholars, the site of Somnath has been a pilgrimage site from ancient times as it was said to be the confluence point of three rivers, Kapila, Hiran and the mythical Saraswati. The confluence was called as Triveni Sangam and is believed to be the place where Soma, the Moon god bathed and regained his luster.

According to Puranas, the original temple of Somnath was built in gold by the moon god Soma, in silver by the sun god Ravi, in wood by Krishna and in stone by the Solanki Rajputs in the 11th century. According to history, The temple had been destroyed as many as seventeen times by Muslim rulers- Junamad in 722 CE, Mahmud of Ghazni in 1024 CE, Allaudin Khilji in 1299 CE, Mohammed Begeda in 1451, Portuguese in 1546 and finally by Aurangzeb in 1702, which was the worst of all attacks when a great wealth was stolen and a large number of people were killed. The temple was rebuilt every time with the reconstructive spirit of the people. The modern temple was reconstructed with the resolve of Sardar Patel who visited the ruins of Somnath Temple in 1947 and then President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, installed the Jyotirlinga in the present temple in 1951.

The present temple, Kailash Mahameru Prasad, was reconstructed in Chalukya style of temple architecture. The sikhara or main spire of the temple is 15 m in height and it has an 8 m tall flag pole at the top. The temple architecture reflects the skills of the Sompura Salats, one of Gujarat's master masons. Commanding a breathtaking view from the tip of the Saurashtra peninsula, kissed by the waves of the Arabian coast, the temple's imposing architecture includes intricate carvings, silver doors, an impressive Nandi idol and the central shivalinga. One can also see a Baṇastambha on the sea protection wall of the temple which mentions that the temple stands at a point that there is no land in a straight line between Somnath seashore until Antarctica. One can also visit Shri Kapardi Vinayak, Shri Hanuman Temple and Vallabhghat.

It is said that temple is located so that no straight line increases in between Somnath seashore till Antarctica continent. According to a Sanskrit inscription on the arrow pillar named Baan Stambha, the temple is standing at a point on the piece of the Indian land.

It is the first point on the land from the north to the South Pole on that particular longitude. In a Sanskrit inscription found on the Arrow-Pillar called Baan-Stambh.

The temple is illuminated in every evening. The Sound & Light Show 'Jay Somnath' is also displayed every night, which allows the pilgrims an ethereal experience in the backdrop of grand Somnath temple and the holy wave sounds of the Ocean.

It’s large and my eyes couldn’t move to any other thing as long as we were there. The best thing which happened was we were at the time of Pooja and Aarti at 7.00 pm. First the local Pandit decorated the lingam and then after 15 mins Aarti Started. The Aarti music was so great and loud that it created vibrations around the hall. When I remember that sound it still creates vibrations in me.

Try to reach inside temple around 6 pm and be there till Aarti complete, after that come out and see Sound and Light

Ahilyabai Temple is a Hindu temple located in Somnath. Situated opposite to the famous Somnath Temple, it is one of the old and beautiful temples in Somnath. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, Ahilyabai Temple was built by Maratha queen Ahilyabai Holkar in 17th century. The history of Ahilyabai Temple and Somnath Temple is closely interlinked. It is said that this temple was constructed as a substitute for the main Somnath Temple when it was raided and ravaged by the Muslim rulers. It is also said that the location of the swayambhulinga came in Ahilyabai's dreams post which she started the construction immediately. Many Hindus believe that Ahilyabai Temple contains the original Jyotirling which was hidden here assuming that the original Somnath Temple is going to be raided. This small, pink painted temple has a Shivling which is below the ground level. Unlike the new Somnath Temple, everybody is allowed to enter the garbagriha and perform pooja with the help of the priest. The aarti offered here is accompanied by multiple musical instruments including damroos and makes for a tantalizing experience. It is believed that the original swayambhulinga Shivling is present here.

Bhalka Tirth or Bhalka Teerth is a significant temple in Somnath. It is considered as one of the must visit places of pilgrimage in Gujarat and among the popular places to visit in Somnath. Bhalka Teerth Temple is dedicated to Lord Sri Krishna. It is believed that this was the place where Jara, the hunter, mistakenly shot an arrow at the feet of Lord Krishna, due to which the Lord left his earthly existence for his heavenly abode. According to mythology, Lord Krishna was meditated under a Peepal tree here. Only then, Jara, the poacher mistook the foot of the Lord for that of a deer and shot straight through it. The arrows came in the feet of God and started bleeding. The hunter then realized his mistake and asked for a confession with God. This incident symbolizes Krishna's departure from the earth and was the sign of the end of Dwapara Yuga. The meaning of arrow is known as Bhal, so this pilgrimage has been known as Bhalka Tirth.  This divine leela of Bhagvan Shri Krishna is immortalized by a beautiful temple and an ancient peepal tree. The temple has ornate sculptures, both inside and outside. Inside the temple, there is a pleasing statue of Krishna playing his flute. A statue of hunter, Jara is also present in front of Lord Krishna in this temple. After being wounded by a hunter's arrow, Lord Krishna walked few kilometers towards Dehotsarg from Bhalka Tirth. He bathed in the Triveni Sangam and then left his body at DehotsargHunter who hit the arrow to lord Krishna was the Monkey King Bali in previous birth.Lord Rama had killed King Bali in previous birth with an arrow. Diu :

Diu Fort (Must Visit)

The Fort of Diu, formally Fortaleza de São Tomé, is an expansive and imposing structure situated in the extreme southeast point of the island. It was built by D. Nuno da Cunha in the year 1535 subsequent to a defense alliance forged by Bahadur Shah, the Sultan of Gujarat and the Portuguese when Humayun, the Mughal Emperor attempted to annex this territory. Later, the fort was rebuilt by D. Joao de Castro in 1546. The Portuguese ruled over this territory for 424 years from 1537 to 1961 even after India's independence from British and were ousted from Diu only when the government of India launched a military action called the 'Operation Vijay'.  Spread over an area of 5.6 hectares, the Diu Fort is protected by the sea on three sides. The outer wall of the fort was built along the coastline and the inner wall had bastions on which guns were mounted. All these bastions have been given the names of famous Christian Saints. The oldest of them all is believed to be of St. George. A double moat between the outer and inner walls provided security to the fort. The moat that separates the fortifications from the castle has been cut through sandstone rocks. A jetty built then on the northwestern side is still in use. There are three gateways to enter into this historic citadel. In the main entry gate, there are five large windows with stone galleries on the main front wall. A permanent bridge leads to the main entryway that is engraved with inscriptions in Portuguese. The fort was highly guarded by cannons on all sides which are still placed inside the fort. Several cannonballs and iron shells used during the Portuguese period litter the parapet of the fort. This enormous monument had residences for the noble, a warehouse, and barracks for the soldiers, house of arms and ammunition, prison, church, and a chapel unfortunately in ruins. There are many underground escape channels inside the fort. A large lighthouse is also located at one end of the fortress.  The Fort commands a magnificent view of the sea and its surrounding areas. From the fortress, one can get a spectacular view of Panikota Fort located in the sea, off the coast opposite to Diu Fort, which was once used as a jail for the Diu Island
